The Benefits of a First Look or Touch

One trend that has gained popularity in recent years is the "first look" or "first touch" moment between the couple before the ceremony begins. This special moment not only adds a unique touch to your wedding day but also offers several benefits that can enhance your overall photography experience.

As a wedding photographer, I've had the privilege of capturing countless love stories and witnessing the magic of weddings unfold. One trend that has gained popularity in recent years is the "first look" or "first touch" moment between the couple before the ceremony begins. A "first look" is a special moment between the bride and groom where they see each other for the first time on their wedding day before the ceremony begins. A "first touch" is similar, but they only touch each other rather than looking at each other, to keep to older traditions. Traditionally, couples would wait until the ceremony to see each other, but the first look breaks from this tradition by allowing them to share a private, intimate moment beforehand.

1. Emotional Connection

Picture this - the morning of your wedding is chaotic as you're preparing everything for the day. You're nervous, everything that could go wrong, has, and you sent your mom on a wild goose chase to get the rings and vows you left at home before the ceremony begins. Your mind is racing, in a panic wondering what's going to go wrong next...

You steal away from all the chaos for a private moment with your spouse and all the noise in your mind suddenly quiets. Whether you opt for a first look or touch, you get to feel the presents of your partner there with you and nothing else matters. It's a moment of pure emotion, where time seems to stand still, and all that matters is the love you share. The first look allows you to connect on a deeper level, grounding yourselves in the significance of the day before the whirlwind of festivities begins. After all, this entire day is for you and your partner, alone, isn't it?

As a photographer, capturing these genuine emotions is priceless and adds depth and authenticity to your wedding album.

2. Uninterrupted Moments

The hustle and bustle of the wedding day often leaves little time for you to truly be alone together. The first look provides a quiet, uninterrupted moment for you and your partner to cherish each other's presence without distractions. This intimate setting offers the perfect opportunity to capture raw emotions and genuine reactions in a relaxed atmosphere.

This is why I also encourage my couples to go for a walk together after the ceremony. I'll ask you whether you want me to come along or not as your photographer, but I will not interrupt your time together. This time is for you to truly be together without all the outside noise.

3. Extended Photography Time

Opting for a first look allows for more flexibility in the wedding day timeline. By scheduling the first look before the ceremony, we can dedicate ample time to capture stunning portraits of the couple, bridal party, and family members without feeling rushed. This additional time ensures that we can explore different locations, lighting conditions, and poses to create a diverse and visually captivating collection of images.

4. Basking in Natural Beauty

Calgary's natural beauty provides the perfect backdrop for your love story. By scheduling your first look earlier in the day, you can take advantage of the stunning natural light that bathes the landscape. Imagine the soft morning glow or the warm afternoon sunshine enveloping you as you share your first look. These moments captured in natural light will be nothing short of breathtaking.

5. Alleviating Pre-Wedding Jitters

This kind of goes back to what I touched on in #1 - nerves are a natural part of any wedding day, but they need not overshadow the joyous occasion. The first look offers a moment of calm amidst the excitement, allowing you to steady each other's nerves and share in the anticipation together. Seeing each other before the ceremony can be incredibly reassuring, reminding you of the love and support you have in one another.

6. Creating Lasting Memories

Your wedding day is a chapter in your love story that deserves to be captured authentically and beautifully. From the tender moments shared between you to the genuine emotions captured in each photograph, the first look will create a lasting memory for you and your partner.

In conclusion, incorporating a first look or first touch moment into your wedding day can elevate the overall experience for both the couple and the photographer. It offers a chance to connect on a deeper level and reduce stress while allowing time for you and your partner to breathe before all the excitement begins.
